Today, as Nostalgia 77, Ben Lamdin has received streams of critical acclaim for his work since he joined Tru-Thoughts records in 2002. After five albums including work as the live outfit Nostalgia 77 Octet, his new album Everything Under the Sun is another example of lush, atmospheric, funky Jazz. The album includes hand picked vocalists such as Lizzy Parks in the unique track “Wildflower”. Gilles Peterson immediately picked out “Wildflower” as a favorite cut, stating that Nostalgia 77 and Lizzy Parks were “two of my favorite acts of 2006 teaming up.” The use of vocalists helps create a beautiful cosmic-tinged jazz album that sounds as much classic, spiritual, Impulse-influenced music as it does Cinematic Orchestra and Koop. “Imagine if Portishead did a jazz record?” Says Lamdin.

Lamdin has written all the lyrics himself. “Everything Under the Sun” differs from previous Nostalgia 77 albums because of its lyrical content Lamdin says “I wanted to continue developing the ideas I developed in the other records, the emotional moods that are in the other ones, but I wanted to vocalise it, I wanted to write the lyrics that reflected this” The Album was engineered with Mike Pelancoli (who engineered the Lily Allen album).

The sentiment driving “Everything Under The Sun” takes on a different approach to Jazz. Through Nostalgia 77 Lamdin aims to make jazz more accessible and less high culture but bring it back to an emotional, honest and positive experience, like the Jazz scene in the 60s. He wants his music to be “…open to everyone, I want them to feel like they are welcome” it’s like “hippy jazz, there is always a groove to it, all the sentiment is hippy.” says Lamdin.
