Description

“Crash And Burn” featuring Natalie Storm is out as a digital single on 27th February, following an upfront limited 10” vinyl version of the single, out on on 30th January. A very early leak of the tracks, to a handful of tastemakers, has been met with a great buzz and support from DJs including Mary Anne Hobbs (XFM) and Rob da Bank (BBC R1). This is the first single from Hint’s upcoming third album, ‘Daily Intake’, which sees the respected producer working with incredible hand-picked vocal talent from around the world, mashing up dancehall, hip hop, UK house and bass music influences to create a scintillating album for dancefloors and headphone moments alike.

“Crash And Burn” featuring Natalie Storm is Hint’s take on current UK house music mixed with Jamaican dancehall. Catchy yet intense, it is undeniably a heavy party tune, but through the serious and thought-provoking lyrics, which address injustices in the World, Jamaican vocalist Storm proves that not every club banger has to be all about partying. Hint (Jonathan James to his Ma) says, “Natalie had free rein to cover whichever topics she wanted, so I think it came off as a true collaboration. She picked up on the mood of the track and used the energy to talk about something passionately.”

In addition to the lead track, this digital release of the single features the Maddslinky Remix and Hint Club Remix of album track “Give It Up” featuring Josie Stingray and 1-O.A.K. and additional reworks of “Crash And Burn” from label-mates The Bamboos and DJ modest of Belleruche, plus up-and-coming hot talent Darq E Freaker.

Also on your promo CD is “Aliens Enter” featuring T-Fly, which is on the upfront 10” but does not appear on the digital single release, remaining an exclusive treat for vinyl junkies until the album’s release in March. Check the video, filmed in Austin, TX, on the Tru Thoughts YouTube channel. This track grew from a killer beat that Hint had made but could not pinpoint the right vocalist to do it justice; that is, until Tru Thoughts A&R Robert Luis came back from SXSW raving about a young female MC he’d seen performing in a showcase for the Austin Hip Hop Cipher, a charitable community project that helps young performers explore their musical talents. As soon as T-Fly started rapping at that show, everyone whipped out their phones and cameras to film this extraordinary talent, and Luis – knowing that Hint was looking for someone to perfect this track – felt he was in the right place at the right time. Hint says of the teenaged MC: “T-Fly really picked up on the more "far out" elements of the beat. It's off-key and peculiar. She has a very free-flowing style and kind of stream-of-consciousness lyrics; moving from talk of aliens to more down-to-Earth stuff about school and life in Austin. She gets really caught up in performing and I think that's what the track is about - music as something supernatural.”

The new album sees Hint consciously moving away from the more downtempo elements of his two previous long-players (Ninja Tune’s ‘Portakabin Fever’ and Tru Thoughts’ ‘Driven From Distraction’) to reconnect with his love of party music, from jungle to dancehall to house and contemporary hip hop. Doing a number of remixes for the likes of Lanu, Stac and Maddslinky – as well as a rework of MJ Cole and Wiley that was played by Annie Mac (BBC R1) – has helped him to hone his style. With radio support across the Rinse FM network and elsewhere; DJ bookings galore; plus an exciting new Ableton Live set; the foundations are laid for Hint to break through in 2012.
