“Head Games” feat. Audris, out 2nd June, isthe first single to be lifted from the forthcoming debut album by young LA based producer Lost Midas, which follows in July on Tru Thoughts. This new material builds on the shimmering signature style showcased on his two attention-grabbing 2013 EP releases, “Memory Flux” and “Hyper Phase”, which gained repeat BBC 6Music spins from Lauren Laverne, Nemone and Edith Bowman; KCRW Top 50 Most Played; props from Resident Advisor, XLR8R, Clash, Earmilk, Urban Outfitters, Topman Generation, and much more.

While the “Memory Flux” EP introduced Lost Midas with a gauzy, shape-shifting bitter-sweetness, and “Hyper Phase” ramped up the lucidity and the tempo; he now combines the two forces for hypnotic effect. Giving a flavour of the deeply personal and spiritual themes explored on his upcoming album (entitled ‘Off The Course’), “Head Games” is inspired by the first-hand experience of trying to maintain perspective and not take life too seriously in the bear-pit of the Los Angeles creative scene. With a light-as-air vocal, from fellow LA contemporary Audris, suspended within a compelling and bass-heavy electronic instrumentaltrack, the bouncing, urgent beat of the verse contrasts with the more freeform and open dynamic of the chorus to tell a story.

“The lyrics reflect a kind of internal pep talk”, says Jason Trikakis, the Boston born drummer-turned-producer behind Lost Midas, who moved to LA in 2011; “There’s a lot of extraneous noise in Los Angeles. People have alternative motives. Depth of personality is hard to find... I suppose I was having a hard time remaining true to myself. To avoid getting sucked in to a state of emotional darkness, I kept having to tell myself ‘don’t waste your time, chasing a lie.’

The single comes with a remix by Gypsy Mamba, whose gloriously grubby reworking subverts the vocals into an androgynous alien howl among a skittering soundtrack of deepest darkest bass, laced with unnervingly playful flurries of top-end oddness. Having become friends when Gypsy Mamba recorded a mix in Trikakis’ Luv U studio (the amazing space he co-runs with his brother, the producer and Native Instruments product specialist NüTrik), the two producers’ complementary production styles fit together like pieces of a puzzle.

With influences ranging from a lifelong love of pop melodies and the ‘80s New Wave through J. Dilla to The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Lost Midas productions tread an aesthetic turf somewhere between Neon Indian and Bibio; irresistible ditties peeped through striking textures and energetic beats. Having established himself as an in-demand hip hop drummer throughout his teens and into his ‘20s, Trikakis mastered a range of instruments on his way to developing an obsession with composition and the endless possibilities of electronic production. Moving across the States to LA led to an intense burst of creativity and the development of the Lost Midas sound you now hear. In addition to inking a label deal with Tru Thoughts and releasing his two EPs, 2013 also saw the first Lost Midas live shows, including a packed gig at the legendary Low End Theory booked by Daddy Kev (Alpha Pup/Flying Lotus) which was followed up by an exciting stint at SXSW 2014.
