“Off The Course”, out 22nd September, is the title track and second official single from Lost Midas’s debut album on Tru Thoughts, which dropped on28th July to impressive accolades including BBC 6Music Album Of The Day and CMU Approved.
An alluring sliver of alternative pop, this single highlights the mix of analogue and digital, of modern and timeless, at the heart of the Lost Midas sound. As sonically arresting as it is thematically thought-provoking, “Off The Course” was inspired by concepts absorbed from the book A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle, which Jason Trikakis – the drummer-turned-producer behind the Lost Midas moniker - was reading at the time of making it. The vocal, heavily manipulated yet still deeply emotive and affecting, is woven into an inventive canvas of beats; an audacious bassline emphasises the urgency of the lyrical message, in defiance of the loping BPM.
The digital single package includes a new remix from fellow LA talent Captain Supernova. “Off The Course (Captain Supernova Chariot Mix)” brings a pitch-shifted, retro space-age delicacy befitting of this mysterious self-styled ‘Astronaut and Multi–Instrumentalist’ who – legend has it – was the “mission commander on a top secret US government mission in 1979 to interact with extraterrestrial life using synthesizers in outer space”.
Building on heavy daytime and specialist radio support for tracks including “Love Undone” feat. Taylor O’Donnell and “Head Games” feat. Audris, Lost Midas’s debut full album has planted him firmly in the consciousness of discerning music fans. As well as being enthusiastically championed by Lauren Laverne, further support has come from her BBC 6Music colleagues Tom Ravenscroft, Radcliffe & Maconie, Don Letts, Nemone and Edith Bowman and revered DJs Lefto and John Kennedy (XFM), as well as online props from THUMP, Resident Advisor, Earmilk, LA Canvas and Okayfuture. Multiple Clash online features and a positive print review add to repeat coverage in XLR8R and a print interview and album review in DJ Mag, not to mention high profile airplay across KCRW and NPR in the US.
The success of his recordings has sparked an increased demand for Lost Midas live, an innovative set-up featuring an acoustic drum kit, electronic drum pad, Traktor DJ, keytar and vocals. With gigs to date including LA’s legendary Low End Theory, SXSW 2014, a packed LA album launch and an Amoeba LA in store performance, Autumn 2014 brings a US mini-tour and his first London dates including a headline show and a Gaslamp Killer support slot (dates overleaf).
With influences ranging from a lifelong love of pop melodies and the ‘80s New Wave through J. Dilla to The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Lost Midas productions boast irresistible ditties peeped through striking textures and energetic beats. Having established himself as an in-demand hip hop drummer throughout his teens and into his ‘20s in Boston, Trikakis mastered a range of instruments on his way to becoming obsessed with composition and the endless possibilities of electronic production. Moving to LA led to an intense burst of creativity and the development of the Lost Midas sound. The ‘Off The Course’ album – which follows two acclaimed 2013 LPs – finds him channelling his inspirations into a cohesive yet adventurous set of shimmering, synth-heavy tracks. The overall effect is a sonic guided tour of LA and its stunning surrounds (as captured in the beautiful artwork), filtered through Trikakis' experiences, the trials, triumphs and self-discovery inherent in navigating an all-consuming new environment.
