Out 5th January, the third official single to be released from Lost Midas’s July debut album ‘Off The Course’ is the digital double A-side “Dream Of Me”/“Off The Course (The Seshen Rework)”.
This single continues the momentum of a huge 2014 for the LA based producer, whose experimental yet alluringly catchy style has been championed by Lauren Laverne and won over many other tastemakers as well as snagging top accolades including BBC 6Music Album Of The Day, Guardian Guide Single Of The Week, KCRW Most Played and NPR’s Songs We Love. The end of the year brings more major media features including a BBC 6Music Guest Mix for Tom Ravenscroft.
Delving deeper into the more alternative side of the album, “Dream Of Me” is Lost Midas’suncompromisingly inventive spin on a four-to-the-floor dance track. Initially harder and somewhat stranger than previous singles, this gem unfurls in all directions - the euphoric build-up and breakdown are coupled with the irresistibly dreamy vocal hooks and fluttering atmosphere that has seen all his tracks traverse the spread of radio playlists from specialist to peak time.
Demanding its own share of the limelight as a double A-side, “Off The Course (The Seshen Rework)” is a new and elaborate reimagining of the album’s title track by label-mates and fellow US West Coast dwellers The Seshen, whose own acclaimed “Unravel” EP dropped this year ahead of their imminent full debut LP for Tru Thoughts. Inspired by the intriguing melody and bodyshaking drum fills of the original, The Seshen’s producer Aki Ehara and singer Lalin St Juste took it upon themselves to play around in the depths of the track, and this is the gorgeous result.
“I was truly blown away”, says Jason Trikakis (aka Lost Midas) of his reaction on first hearing the rework. “It’s flattering to hear someone you’re a fan of cover an original, and I’ve got to say they nailed it. Lalin’s vocals are so dreamy and mesmerising. The chordal re-harmonization is really beautiful as well.” From Aki’s side: “I was curious to see how the melody would work with a female voice and a more organic, looser sounding vocal. And I wanted it to have elements of the original but also to be a departure. I started to experiment with re-harmonising the chords around the vocal, and from there the writing process kind of took off.”
With influences ranging from Mahavishnu Orchestra and Actress to Claude Debussy and Boards of Canada,Lost Midas productions boast irresistible ditties peeped through striking textures and energetic beats. Having established himself as an in-demand hip hop drummer throughout his teens and into his ‘20s in his native Boston, Trikakis mastered a range of instruments on his way to becoming obsessed with composition and the endless possibilities of electronic production. Moving to LA led to an intense burst of creativity and the development of the Lost Midas sound. The ‘Off The Course’ album found him channeling his inspirations into a cohesive yet adventurous set of shimmering, synth-heavy tracks – of sorts, a sonic guided tour of LA and its stunning surrounds, filtered through Trikakis's experiences in an all-consuming new environment. In addition to support across 6Music, as well as tastemakers including Lefto and John Kennedy (XFM), props have come from THUMP, RA, Earmilk, LA Canvas, Okayfuture and XLR8R with features in Clash, DJ Mag and more.
The success of his recordings has sparked an increased demand for Lost Midaslive, an innovative set-up featuring an acoustic drum kit, electronic drum pad, Traktor DJ, keytar and vocals. With past gigs including LA’s legendary Low End Theory, SXSW 2014, a packed LA album launch and Amoeba in store performance, Autumn 2014 ramped it up with a US mini-tour, a set at Tru Thoughts 15th Anniversary LA showand his first London dates including Gaslamp Killer support.
