The “Futurespective EP” sees Harleighblu unveiling a cutting-edge electronic spin on her signature hip hop/soul sound via three new tracks – in collaboration with Lost Midas (whose 2014 debut LP snagged both BBC 6Music Album of the Day and a Guardian Guide Single of the Week), Dr Zygote (Black Acre) and Azure - out 1st June on Tru Thoughts. Early support for this new direction includes MistaJam (BBC 1Xtra) and John Kennedy (XFM).

Since introducing herself in 2013 with the charismatic, beat-heavy soul of her debut LP ‘Forget Me Not’, championed by MistaJam and many others, Harleighblu has not looked back. Her voice proving a magnet for collaborators and remixers, subsequent single releases were switched up by the likes of Peshay, Astro Raw (Lionbabe), Titeknots, Sware, The Last Skeptik, Klashnekoff and Rocé (with others, including Eats Everything, SpectraSoul and Starkiller - the production outfit of C.E. Garcia and Alfredo E. Fratti, members of Adrian Younge's Venice Dawn - also lining up to work with her).

Here, Harleighblu takes the next step, exploring her love of eclectic future beats with some of the finest producers around to craft a sharp, forward-thinking style of soulful pop music dusted with grit and glitter in equal measure. Opener “Mmm feat. Dr Zygote” sees Harleighblu spinning a late night tale of lost shoes, dignity (and more) over a seedily slinky bassline and synth fuzz; on “I feat. Lost Midas”, the LA producer’s distinctive warm, woozy and experimental sound envelops Harleighblu’s emphatic tones as she zeroes in on the target of her lust. “Meant To Be feat. Azure” comes over like a hybrid of late ‘80s/early ‘90s Madonna and FKA Twigs, the rich yet delicate vocals melding with an arresting alt. R&B backdrop and gorgeous production from fellow Nottingham rising star Azure.

As this young artist has metamorphosed, via the experiences and consequences of success coupled with the natural twists and turns of early twenties life, so her frame of reference has shifted; in place of the more wide-eyed romantic leanings of old comes a frank, self-possessed lyrical voice that pulls no punches and makes no apologies. “My music reflects what is exciting me, and right now I’m more focused on the future than the past. Not only sonically, with all the unbelievable electronic producers out there, but in life. Pretty much everything in my life has changed”, says Harleighblu; “I’ve got this feeling of freedom, I’m getting tangled up in different experiences. Most of my writing and inspiration has been happening in the small hours. And all of a sudden these totally different songs are pouring out.”

Brimming with personality and dexterity, Harleighblu’s music and performance style has seen her likened to Erykah Badu and AlunaGeorge in the same breath, and praised by everyone from BBC Introducing to Echoes, who snapped her up for a cover feature. This adds to 300K+ YouTube hits; media acclaim including Q, Clash, DJ Mag, AfroPunk, SoulBounce, Earmilk, Artrocker and USA Today; props and airplay from tastemakers including MistaJam, Charlie Sloth, Trevor Nelson, Target, Don Letts, Nemone, Huey Morgan, John Kennedy, Mr Scruff, Harry Shearer, Craig Charles and Chase & Status; and live sessions including XFM X-Posure, The Selector and MistaJam. Through a string of great singles, including “Sittin’ By The Window”, “Enough Now”, “Play Me” and “Who’s That Girl?” she has picked up over 50 plays at BBC 1Xtra alone, among a very wide spread of support.

A spectacular 2014 saw the Nottingham talent stealing the national and international limelight with more than 40 live shows including major festival bookings (The Great Escape, Glastonbury, Bestival, Shambala, Boomtown, Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide and Green Man) and a 10 date French tour, as well as support for the likes of Amp Fiddler. 2015 is turning into an even bigger one yet as Harleighblu gears up to showcase her progression in sound through festival and touring plans (see confirmed live dates overleaf – much more to come) and further new music.
