Manu Delago lifts the lid on a new song in collaboration with Joss Stone: a glimmering, shape-shifting slice of multi-layered modern pop that shows both artists in a totally new light.

The digital double A-side, “Why Don’t You feat. Joss Stone” / “Sun In The North feat. Isa Kurz” is the third single from Manu Delago this year. Unveiling a previously unreleased collaboration with Joss Stone, alongside a favourite album track and a cutting edge remix from SOHN band member Albin Janoska, celebrated Austrian Hang player, drummer and producer Manu Delago continues the arresting fusion of pop and experimentalism, of acoustic and electronic elements, heard on April’s acclaimed ‘Silver Kobalt’ LP.

The world’s best known Hang player, and an adventurous explorer of its many sonic qualities, Delago featured heavily in BBC Radio 4’s recent documentaryon the instrument. Further radio appearances around ‘Silver Kobalt’ include a Maida Vale session for BBC Radio 2’s Jamie Cullum, a Robert Elms (BBC London) session and diverse airplay from the likes of Nitin Sawhney (BBC R2), Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6Music), Don Letts (BBC 6Music), Alex Lester (BBC R2) and beyond; support also includes i-D, The Arts Desk, Wax Poetics and DJ Mag, to add to widespread media coverage across Europe, the US and Japan. Continuing a busy year, this single precedes another headline tour for his band, Manu Delago Handmade (dates overleaf), following a sellout Spring run (which included support for The Cinematic Orchestra) and a Summer spent playing huge shows as a key member of Björk’s live outfit.

A tender, uplifting ballad woven through with deep, earthy bass and exciting electronic textures, “Why Don’t You feat. Joss Stone” is an addictive a pop nugget for our times, to file between Jamie XX and Beyoncé; the playfully enigmatic tones of the Hang bubble in and around a delicate yet impassioned vocal turn from Stone, who is currently enjoying a high-profile comeback with her own solo material. Choose from the snappy Single Edit and the stealthier Original Edit.

Representing the album, “Sun In The North feat. Isa Kurz” is a stripped-back yet potent lyrical snapshot of a day on the beach on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, its rhythms inspired by playing with Indian musicians there and the imagery illuminated to quirky perfection by Kurz, also a key member of Manu Delago Handmade.

Fellow Austrian Albin Janoska, a rising solo artist as well as being renowned for his work with SOHN (4AD),brings a compelling remix, subtly teasing out the strands and playing up the ludicrously catchy chorus of the magnetically charged, sci-fi-flavoured album track “Chemical Reaction feat. Rahel”.

Still aged just 30, the charismatic Manu Delago is no stranger to collaborating with the World’s best talent, having worked both live and on record with artists including Imogen Heap, Andreya Triana, Anoushka Shankar, Björk, Cinematic Orchestra and even the London Symphony Orchestra. On ‘Silver Kobalt’ he again collaborated with co-producer Matt Robertson (Björk, The Prodigy, The Streets, Bat For Lashes), following his work on Delago’s 2013 breakthrough LP ‘Bigger Than Home’, for a sound that revolves around the unique quality of the Hang but encompasses so much more, from acoustic percussion, bassoon, piano and chimes to layers of beats and synths; the result is a totally unique creation that is as rich in melody as it is in wit and invention.
