“The magnificent Moonchild… good work”– Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music)
“Highly-anticipated” – Saint Heron
Following on from the success of the official release of their sophomore album ‘Please Rewind’ on 6th November (US)/20th November (ROW), Moonchild’s digital single “Don’t Wake Me” drops on 29th January on Tru Thoughts. Moonchild use a three-piece horn section to relay acoustic and neo-soul elements over electronic contemporary beats and ethereal gliding vocals. They have recently supported The Internet (Odd Future’s Syd tha Kyd & Matt Martians) on their US/Canada tour.
A dreamy neo-soul/jazz trio from Los Angeles, CA, Moonchild are an exciting new addition to Tru Thoughts, fitting in a treat on the eclectic indie’s roster. In a whirlwind three years Moonchild have self-released two albums, and collaborated and toured with highly-respected names in the soul-jazz crowd including Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, India.Arie, Leela James and more. Attracting international tastemaker support from the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music) who featured the group on his staple Brownswood Bubblers 11 complast year, WHUR-DC, KCRW and LA 102.3, the band have also found themselves being praised by a host of iconic artists including Robert Glasper, Laura Mvula, James Poyser, Jazzy Jeff, Jose James and Tyler, The Creator and The Internet. Having signed to Tru Thoughts, they have gained a wider audience still via the official release for their album ‘Please Rewind’ on the UK label this year.
Amber Navran (vocals, tenor saxophone), Max Bryk (alto saxophone, flute, clarinet, keyboards) and Andris Mattson (trumpet/flugelhorn, keyboards) met in 2012 in their junior year at the University of Southern California in the Jazz Studies programme. Inspired by the respected hip hop and progressive electronic music scene in LA, the group’s sound continues to blossom as they create music influenced by the likes of J Dilla, Flying Lotus and D’Angelo - all of whom have been prevalent in broadening the groups musical horizons over the years, leading up to the production of their 2015 release - ‘Please Rewind’.
The second single to be released from the album, “Don’t Wake Me” has been picked by KCRW (December 18th) as their ‘Today’s Top Tune’. In this powerful ballad written about being in a long distance relationship Navran’s rich vocals burst into full bloom, reaching new emotional levels as they captivate and charm the listener. Featuring the notes of an unplugged Wurlitzer, Moonchild, experiments with off grid practices to develop the raw mood which is achieved so naturally in the music. “There was a certain feeling and mood in the song that I wanted to reach with Don’t Wake Me” expresses Max. Amber continues “like most of the songs on the album it’s about being in love and we explore those feelings through the strings, orchestral sounds, and denser vocal harmonies you hear on the track.”
Moonchild’s new album ‘Please Rewind’ has received high praise from blogs including Echoes Magazine, Saint Heron, Kick Mag, multiple spins from Don Letts (BBC 6Music), Anthony Valadez (KCRW), Robert Elms (BBC London), ‘Record of the Week’ status from Huey Morgan (BBC 6Music) and kind words from Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music).
Moonchild have recently completed a sell-out US tour with recently Grammy Nominated band - The Internet and will be announcing new tour dates for 2016 very soon, so watch this space!
