“A bold move, but one that Yoshida has succeeded at” – DJ MAG
“One of the best of the year for sure… Joyous and engaging and creative and brilliant" -LAUREN LAVERNE (BBC 6MUSIC)
“Isn’t that wonderful?! A brilliant, brilliant record” – TOM RAVENSCROFT (BBC 6MUSIC) …Praise for the ‘Ceremonial’ LP
“Ceremony” is the third single from Anchorsong’s ‘Ceremonial’ LP, which saw the London-based Japanese producer gaining huge acclaim for his concoction of catchy melodic phrasing, unique beats and vintage African influences. Following the recent “Expo” single, “Ceremony” highlights another key track from the album alongside four new remixes from Foreign Skin, Madcap, sUb_modU and Anchorsong himself.
Championed from early on in his artistic journey by the likes of Huw Stephens, Nylon Magazine and others, Anchorsong has found the world opening up more widely still with this second album and its exciting progression in sound. As well as Lauren Laverne repeatedly declaring it one of her favourite albums of the year, major radio support includes Huw Stephens’ BBC Radio 1 ‘It’s Album Time’ feature, adding to heavy coverage from the likes of XLR8R, Clash, DJ Mag, Songlines (who named it a Top of the World album) and other media across the world.
“I spent a long time making this record, I tried to expand my style, and I’m very pleased with the positive feedback”, enthuses Masaaki Yoshida, the man behind the Anchorsong moniker. “I’ve been on the road since it came out, and the audiences also respond really well! I’ve especially enjoyed the way it is reaching out to not only electronic music fans, but also more traditional music listeners”
“Ceremony”started life as one of the sonic experiments that inspired the whole album adventure, its mellifluous guitar phrase leading into a buoyant and evocative, multi-instrumental piece that fittingly ended up tying together the project as the closing track on the LP. One of the most popular tracks from Anchorsong’s Boiler Room set, this catchy tune has gained exposure on XLR8R and diverse radio play including Lauren Laverne, Don Letts, Huw Stephens and Gideon Coe.
“Ceremony (Foreign Skin Remix)” sees rising producer Foreign Skin adding to a rapidly expanding remix CV that includes reworks for the likes of Phoria and Fickle Friends. Here she demonstrates the magic touch that has seen her gaining early online support from i-D, the 405 and more, expanding the atmosphere of the lead track with a deep, euphoric spin on Anchorsong’s minimalistic composition, chiming synth riffs and vocal textures weaving through a swirling backdrop.
Up next, Anchorsong presents a new version of “Kajo”, putting a bouncier spin on the Gamelan- and steel pan-heavy album track to reflect the tune’s live incarnation. The same track is given a spacious D&B mix courtesy of Madcap, one of the genre’s leading lights who has previously reworked the likes of LTJ Bukem, Peshay, 4-Hero, Cloud 9 and Utah Jazz, as well as releasing his own lauded productions to top level radio support from Friction, B. Traits, DJ Hype and beyond.
sUb_modU (an Italian musician and producer with previous work on BBE and Agogo) reworks “Oriental Suite”, stripping it back to heighten the laid-back melody and tropical elements of the original -- a track that reflects Yoshida’s homeland as much as his study of African beats, with live bongos from Japanese percussionist Mu-chan and beautiful strings.
