On 15th July, Tru Thoughts will be releasing “I’d Cry”/”Here Again”, the third single from the ‘Look Around The Corner’ album by Quantic and Alice Russell with the Combo Bárbaro; as a special treat for the fans and wax collectors, this double A-side single will be coming out on beautiful, teardrop shaped translucent blue vinyl.
The ‘Look Around The Corner’ LP came out in 2012, marking the first full collaborative album from musical soulmates Quantic and Alice Russell, two of the UK’s best loved independent artists and leading lights of the international funk, soul and alternative dance music scene. Testament to its massive crossover appeal, the accolades for the album include BBC 6Music Album of the Day and praise in the likes of Q, Uncut, The Arts Desk, Songlines, BBC Music, Clash, Wax Poetics; and it has gone on to sell 25,000 copies and counting.
Following official 6Music Playlisting for the first single and title track, Quantic and Alice Russell toured the album with the Combo Bárbaro to sell-out crowds throughout the UK, Europe, US and beyond; performing radio sessions for Jamie Cullum (BBC R2), Lauren Laverne (BBC 6Music), Robert Elms (BBC London), FIP, France Inter, KCRW and more. The second single release, in February 2013, highlighted popular album cut “Magdalena” alongside a treasure trove of remixes and exclusives, gaining further heavy support and quickly selling out on vinyl.
The A-side on this new single, and the inspiration for the unique teardrop vinyl design, is “I’d Cry”, a modern take on seventies soul ballads, on which Russell’s heartfelt candy-laced vocals play bittersweet call-and-response with gypsy-folk violins and the dancing piano keys of Alfredito Linares, one of the musical stars of the record. The vinyl features a new, exclusive 7” Edit, which is joined on the digital release by the seven-minute album version.
Gracing the flip-side is “Here Again”, another original Quantic and Alice composition from the album, showcasing the sheer depth and quality of this musical pairing - from Quantic’s trademark fingerpicked guitar hook and feather-light production, laced with a breezy and tropical Latin flavour, to the blues and gospel inspired lyrics and memorable melodies animated with real finesse and heart in a stunning vocal turn by Alice Russell.
Recorded at Quantic’s Sonido del Valle studio in Cali, Colombia, the ‘Look Around The Corner’ LP mixes sweet soul and blues with overtones of folk and gospel, and the inimitable swing of Quantic's world-renowned outfit the Combo Bárbaro who form the core band. Since the album’s release, Alice Russell has been in the music headlines again with her recent fifth solo LP ‘To Dust’, which has seen her performing in BBC 6Music Live @ Maida Vale, making her US Network TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and being booked for a primetime Glastonbury 2013 set. Quantic has been gracing the World’s stages with his lauded Ondatrópica band (Soundway), while also cooking up a new solo album. With growing international fanbases, regular sell-out tours, and coverage across the World’s cultural media Quantic and Alice Russell are each well established and prolific artists in their own right, and this stunning project continues to delight existing fans and bring their talents to the attention of an ever wider audience.
