Description

Upping the ante yet again, Quantic brings you his Combo Bárbaro.

He may be keeping the world on its toes with a new band and a new name to get acquainted with, but you know you can always rely on musical trailblazer Will \"Quantic\" Holland to produce an equally new concoction of sounds that will blow you clean away…
This covetable 7” single provides the first taste of Tradition In Transition, the hotly anticipated upcoming album from Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, which sees Quantic mining the lesser-tapped musical sources from the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa and fusing those rediscovered psychedelic, experimental and rhythmically rich sounds of the past with deep funk and soul elements and folkloric vocal styles. The stunning longplayer, and upcoming live tour of Europe and America, will give life to an explosive sonic snapshot of the eclectic and ever-evolving musical landscape of the Americas, played out by a carefully assembled international cast of musical creators, including the Peruvian pianist Alfredo Linares; revered Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai; and British drummer Malcolm Catto of The Heliocentrics.

On the A side of this 7” you will find the glorious “Linda Morena”. Taken from the album, this guajira style song features the rich vocal tones of legendary Panamanian soul singer Kabir, who delivers the charmingly universal and simplistic hook lyric in a mixture of English and Spanish, against the complex musical backdrop that calls to mind the hot hustle and bustle of the Panama City in which the song is rooted.

The AA side, “Enyere Kumbara” is a cover of a classic funk track, originally by Julian Angulo, a virtuoso guitarist hailing from the Pacific coast of Colombia. Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro seemed destined to record this song: pianist Alfredo Linares played on and arranged the original recording back in the 70s, and used to play the song live on a regular basis with Angulo s band; as it happens, these shows took place in a hotel right next door to the house in which Will Holland now lives in Cali. “Enyere Kumbara” is exclusive to this single and will not appear on the longplayer.
