Quantic may be keeping the world on its toes with a new band and a new name to get acquainted with, but you can always rely on that musical trailblazer to produce an equally new concoction of sounds that will blow you clean away.
Tradition In Transition - recorded in Cali, Colombia - is the upcoming album from Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, which sees Will Quantic Holland mining the lesser-tapped musical sources from the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa and fusing those rediscovered psychedelic, experimental and rhythmically rich sounds of the past with deep funk and soul elements and folkloric vocal styles. This exceptional longplayer gives life to an explosive sonic snapshot of an ever-evolving musical landscape, played out by a carefully assembled international cast of musical creators.
Quantic has sold in excess of 100,000 records in his various guises, including solo projects and with his acclaimed live funk band, the Quantic Soul Orchestra. As well as countless features and glowing reviews in publications ranging from DJ Mag to the Guardian, his track Mi Swing Es Tropical with Nickodemus featured in the worldwide iPod advert throughout 2007, bringing him further into the spotlight.
In 2007 Holland moved to Cali, Colombia s third largest city, to pursue his passion for unearthing lost treasures from Colombia s musical past and making new music with the golden array of talent available today. Upon realising the potency and sheer quality present in these players – some of whom contributed to the acclaimed QSO album, Tropidelico - Holland assembled his Combo Bárbaro (literally translating as group of barbarians or people from outside Europe) to take up the baton from the Quantic Soul Orchestra in the next phase of his musical vision. This stellar array of musicians includes pianist Alfredo Linares, who wowed sell-out crowds on the QSO s 2008 tour; Freddy Colorado, the charismatic cornerstone of the Cali music circuit, on congas; Fernando Silva on baby bass; Holland himself on electric guitar; and on drums, long time Quantic collaborator Malcolm Catto, also famed for his own band The Heliocentrics.
Tradition In Transition also benefits incalculably from the talents of revered Brazilian writer, arranger and musical innovator Arthur Verocai, who scored a 12 piece string section on several themes. Legendary Panamanian soul singer Kabir lends his rich vocals to two tracks (including the single, “Linda Morena”); Indian-born singerFalu, now USA-based, brings a beguiling mix of North Indian Classical and rock-influenced vocal styles; and Pacific folklore singer and award-winning writer Nidia Góngora contributes her beautiful song “Un Canto A Mi Tierra”. The result is a multi-cultural patchwork – a record bathed but not exclusively rooted in Colombian musical culture – honouring and utilising its contributors backgrounds while conjuring up a unique brand of contemporary music that is a joy and a celebration to listen to, and a live experience that defies comparison.
