“Fantastic… a bit of an epic EP… Absolutely loving that” – NEMONE (BBC 6MUSIC)

"One to lose yourself in and get on repeat all day." - TOPMAN GENERATION
"fluorescent, fragrant electronic music." - CLASH
Tru Thoughts are excited to unveil the debut album from Lost Midas, following two attention-grabbing 2013 EPs, which saw him heavily championed by Lauren Laverne (BBC 6Music), Nemone, Edith Bowman (BBC 6Music/R1), Resident Advisor, XLR8R, Clash and Earmilk and scaling the KCRW Top 50 Most Played chart.Entitled ‘Off The Course’, the full-length album (out 28th July) channels a wide range of influences from Mahavishnu Orchestra and Actress to Claude Debussy and Boards of Canada, into a cohesive yet tantalisingly adventurous set of shimmering, synth-heavy instrumental and vocal tracks.
Jason Trikakis, the Boston born drummer-turned-producer behind the Lost Midas name, relocated to Los Angeles in 2011, magnetically drawn to its inimitable music scene and willing to turn his life upside down to be a part of it. To listen to ‘Off The Course’ is to take a unique sonic guided tour of the city and its aesthetically stunning surrounds, filtered through Trikakis' emotional and personal experiences, the trials, triumphs and self-discovery as he navigates this all-consuming new environment.
From the first scorching seconds of opening track “Sunset Strut”, a palpable energy runs through the album, shape shifting into countless moods and forms for a thrilling journey. The bass-laced edginess is infused with a mellow, philosophical slant on lead single “Head Games”, with light-as-air vocals from LA contemporary Audris giving voice to Trikakis’ efforts to maintain perspective and sanity in the Los Angeles scene. Premiered by THUMP (VICE), the single has won over countless tastemakers, including Tom Ravenscroft, Don Letts, Nemone (BBC 6Music), KCRW and Okayfuture.
Candy-coated simplicity builds up to a dazzling trance on “Pixy Dust”, the perfect bridge to the gauzy, bitter-sweetness of autobiographical heartbreak tale “Love Undone” feat. Taylor O’Donnell - the only cut from last year’s stunning EP releases to make the leap onto this album. The switch is flipped for a pacier and more experimental period through the middle of the LP, with the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it skit “Transformations”, inventively structured up-tempo dance floor wizardry of “Dream Of Me”, and suspenseful interplay between piano melody and guttural bass on “It Is”.
“Tick Tock Tick” seesTrikakis collaborating with his brother Nick - aka producer NüTrik - with whom he shares the impressive ‘Luv U’ studio, a burgeoning downtown creative hub which has recently played host to Boiler Room sessions among other events. Like a sci-fi theme that went off the rails, this deep and daring club tune then weaves seamlessly into the edgy, after hours euphoria of “Westerly Terrace” which was inspired by the atmosphere of the movie Drive, andnamed after the street in Trikakis’ neighbourhood where it was filmed.
The thought provoking title track, “Off The Course”, is inspired by concepts absorbed from the book A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle, which Trikakis was reading at the time. With a sense that the adventure is paying off, and calm is being restored, the album winds up serenely with a pure shot of gentle beauty, melding the organic and the electronic in the shape of “Archetype Forgotten”.
Lost Midas productions reflect a diverse and rich musical upbringing, and a lifelong love of pop melodies that feeds into his irresistible creations. Having established himself as an in-demand hip hop drummer throughout his teens and into his ‘20s, Trikakis mastered a range of instruments on his way to developing an obsession with composition and the endless possibilities of electronic production, and the move to LA was the catalyst for his sound to crystallise. 2013 saw the first Lost Midas live shows, including a packed gig at the legendary Low End Theory, which was followed up by an exciting stint at SXSW 2014.Recently snapped up by eminent US booking agency Autonomous, expect many more outings for the alluring Lost Midas live experience in the near future.
