“I love that record - it’s big” – CHARLIE SLOTH (BBC R1/1XTRA) | “I’m a huge fan” – RAS KWAME (CAPITAL XTRA)

Out 24th July, ‘GWz All The Way’ is the debut album from Ghost Writerz (GWz), who have had a massive six months since signing to Tru Thoughts to spearhead the label’s UK Sound System Culture platform, Sharp And Ready. Their powerful mix of Bashment, Hip Hop, Jungle, Reggae and Dub has been championed by everyone from Toddla T (and many more across BBC R1/1Xtra) to Clash and RWD to Mercury Prize winners Young Fathers.
Pioneers of the UK's very own Sound System Music, GWz create supernatural, soaring bass music infused with conscious lyricism, melodic hooks and virtuoso live instrumentation. The core duo is producer Harry Metcalfe and vocalist (and producer) Jason Bradshaw. Many will also know Bradshaw from his Jimmy Screech days which saw him tour internationally in Roots Manuva’s Banana Klan and earn acclaim for his solo LPs from Capital Xtra to The Independent and The Guardian. Metcalfe - who grew up playing guitar in bands before becoming entranced by reggae, soul and bass - has also been making solo waves as Sleepy Time Ghost, and recently helmed the Ghost Writerz Remix of Quantic’s “Spark It feat. Shinehead”, hailed as a junglist anthem by THUMP. Both are proudly part of the Unit 137 Sound System family and have rocked festivals and parties all over including a huge takeover at Boomtown 2014; Boomtown and Nozstock festivals are currently lined up for this Summer, among a long list of other bookings to be announced soon.
The GWz soundhit home immediately, their first two standalone singles - “Back It Up feat. G.O.L.D & Shiffa Dan” and Pete Cannon collaboration “How We Living” – gaining heavy airplay to add to live features for Toddla T, Jamie Rodigan (Bang FM), Lukan (Déjà vu) and Resonance FM; not to mention support including Ras Kwame, 6Music’s Tom Ravenscroft,Steve Lamacq and Huey Morgan, Goldierocks, Mi-Soul, Trap Mag, and playlisting on French national Radio Nova.
The trajectory continues with the LP’s lead single “Tell Me feat. Shiffa Dan & G.O.L.D”/“Rose”, a double A-side (out 22nd June, with remixes from Ras Kwame’s OHP, DJ Vadim and Gold Dubs & Nushu) which spins from slick Future Dancehall into retro Lovers Rock, further highlighting the stunning range, the invention, the heart and the fire at work on the album. “It’s all about you, the listener, really feeling the music as opposed to just hearing it”, says Bradshaw.
Adding extra magic to the duo’s vision, ‘GWz All The Way’ features a host of guests; the inimitable voice of Rodney P kicks things off on “Shut Up!”, a raucous, boozy lyrical collaboration between Bradshaw and the Godfather of UK Hip Hop. “Over And Over” stakes its place as the band’s theme song, yo-yoing compellingly between the gamut of Sound System riddims on which the GWz musical manifesto is founded. Ground laid, the time comes to push forward, “Back It Up” and “Wind Up Your Waist feat. Shiffa Dan, RTKal & G.O.L.D” stirring a state of trap-laced Future Dancehall nirvana with bars from regular GWz sparring partners, Birmingham’s RTKal and London’s G.O.L.D and Shiffa Dan. Consciousness reigns on “Survive feat. Zico, Galak & Jago (onlyjoe)”, a gritty and impassioned D&B-inflected anthem to solidarity.
A killer beat with an eastern feel becomes “Shangri La”, on which the revered Serocee’s commanding flow and RTKal’s shotgun stylings jostle with Bradshaw’s melodically intoned hooks among a Jungle backdrop. “For The Love” sees Bradshaw and charismatic MC Amy True building an ode to the art that keeps them going. GWz revert to their core elements for the spine-tingling, ghostly Hip Hop of “Haunted House” and the optimistic “Rose”, a modern spin on Lovers Rock, respectively delving into the darker and lighter elements of a relationship.
Sharp And Ready represents a coalescing of influences and heritage with the distinct sonic and societal markers of our time, into a New Wave, carried forward by a growing contingent of passionate artists; telling the story of the richness and fullness of UK Sound System Culture and establishing a trusted channel from which new music can flow.
