Darkrum / Hit The Bottom
- Label: Tru Thoughts
- Cat Number: TRUDD059
“Darkrum” is the second single to be lifted from Japanese electronic artist Anchorsong’s debut album ‘Chapters’, highlighting a standout track alongside exclusive brand new material and remixes.
With an unshakable melodic hook, overlaid in unusual instrumental textures, “Darkrum” is an atmospheric and suspenseful track that shows how Anchorsong’s diverse influences, from classic heavy rock to glitchy electronica and dark melodic pop, can fuse into something entirely new - and has proven to be one of the most popular cuts on the LP. On this single it is given the remix treatment by exciting UK producers Kidkanevil (who has recently produced for Foreign Beggars) and Throwing Snow (Ho Tep/Local Action) for a fresh injection of cutting edge flavour, and a brand new track, “Hit The Bottom”, is also unveiled.
With the ‘Chapters’ album Anchorsong announced himself as a serious new talent on the block, having already created an international buzz on the live scene and on YouTube with his skilful and atmospheric performances - in which he builds his tracks live from the ground up, using keys and MPCs and sometimes incorporating a live string section, to spine-tingling effect. The album more than lived up to the hype, with universally positive coverage in publications as diverse as Q, Clash, Mixmag, Resident Advisor and The Arts Desk; in the radio world, Anchorsong has been heavily championed and featured by Huw Stephens (BBC R1) and John Kennedy (XFM), with widespread radio play elsewhere from the likes of Rob da Bank (BBCR1), Huey Morgan (BBC 6Music), Gilles Peterson (BBC R1/6Music), RBMA Radio and more.
Anchorsong (aka Masaaki Yoshida) relocated from Tokyo to London with the dream of becoming a professional musician and recording artist in London’s exciting electronic music culture, and the intention – as a former guitarist in a Japanese rock band - of finding a way to make a live electronic music show as compelling, dynamic, and truly live as a full band experience.
The buzz surrounding Anchorsong has continued to build, with online coverage on Mixmag and a live session and week-long ‘Artist in Residence’ feature on XFM X-Posure recently (on which he first announced this impending single release), and his live gigs have spiralled to include sell-out headlines at London’s XOYO, a headline at Sonar Japan to an audience of thousands, and other festivals including Soundwave and Outlook.
