Following major album support from the likes of Cerys Matthews, Huey Morgan and Nemone on BBC 6Music, as well as XFM's John Kennedy and Eddy Temple-Morris, 24th June sees the release of “An Invisible Light”, the second official single to be lifted from Natural Self’s revelatory fourth LP, ‘Neon Hurts My Eyes’ on Tru Thoughts.
In anticipation of this release, “An Invisible Light” was recently highlighted as Today's Top Tune on US tastemaker radio station KCRW, continuing the recent outpouring of top level appreciation for Natural Self, a lauded producer and beatmaker whose latest outing finds him exploring his considerable and unique talents as a singer-songwriter, the better to fulfil his ever-developing musical vision.
The lead song is joined on this digital single by new remixes from Sonnymoon and Robinn, taking the layered, cutting edge electronics, catchy hooks and palpable atmosphere, and luring the listener irresistibly into deeper, stranger terrain. "The drums sound like they're made of reinforced concrete, cracking open the earth to reveal a subterranean radioactive glow, shining out across a stormy and fractured landscape...Well that's what's going on in my head, anyway”, says Nathaniel Pearn, aka Natural Self, of the Sonnymoon Remix which features additional vocals from Anna Wise, one half of the fast rising US based duo, and a recent collaborator with Kendrick Lamar.
London based producer Robinn (Compost records), brings an immersive take on the song, which Pearn describes as "3D; like floating in a vacuum where time expands and compresses while red and silver lights flash in the darkness", perfectly complementing and expanding on his own inventive soundscape.
While the sound of Natural Self in 2013 retains shades of the hip hop, funk and tropical influences that informed his earlier albums, his highly poised confection of beats, bleeps and noises drawn from a vast textural palette, is now more redolent of Radiohead and the Beta Band; while a tight, melodic pop-but-not-pop sensibility aligns the songs with Little Dragon or James Blake. Having previously enlisted guest singers including Andreya Triana for main vocals, Natural Self now lays himself bare. Immersive and synth-heavy, this is electronic music with warmth and heart, a sense of being at once futuristic and nostalgic as it explores themes of technology, the environment, the passing of time and our place in the world.
