“Sittin’ By The Window”, out 7th July on Tru Thoughts, is the third official single to be lifted from Harleighblu’s debut album, ‘Forget Me Not’. This digital release brings a stash of exclusive edits and remixes of the lead track, including a new version with a verse from MC Klashnekoff, which taps into the gritty, hip hop essence of the original and is already gaining heavy BBC 1Xtra airplay from MistaJam and Trevor Nelson ahead of the official promo.
Testament to the strength in depth on her album (produced by Joe Buhdha), “Sittin’ By The Window” is yet another highlight, unveiling a different side of Harleighblu following the strident soul of previous singles “Play Me” and “Let Me Be”, which drew comparisons with the likes of Amy Winehouse and Jill Scott. Here, the Nottingham native strikes somewhere between AlunaGeorge and a young Lauryn Hill, her sparky, ambitious self-mythologising paired with boom bap beats and a cool, charismatic vocal flow. This fresh edge is reflected in a great video, to premiere soon.
The excellent and varied collection of remixes here includes a frenetic reimagining from LA based label-mate and BBC 6Music favourite Lost Midas, winding the tempo up into trap territory. Elsewhere, adventurous hip hop-leaning producer The Last Skeptik – adding to a CV that includes work for everyone from Gorillaz to Marina And The Diamonds – heads for the left field with an arresting slice of bass-heavy downtempo goodness; while Seyr’s pitch shifting antics and dreamlike dub backdrop add up to an immersive, otherworldly trip.
After fantastic recent live performances at 2014’s Great Escape and YO1 festivals, with her tight new live/electronic band set-up, this single builds on a busy summer for Harleighblu. Upcoming shows include Glastonbury, Bestival, Love Supreme, Boomtown Fair, Shambala and more major dates in the UK and beyond, plus support for Amp Fiddler on his October UK tour. (See full upcoming dates overleaf.)
A gifted and generous live performer, and a true grafter, Harleighblu has followed in the footsteps of peers including Jake Bugg and Liam Bailey to rise through the thriving local scene onto the national stage. Her distinctive style - deep, hip-hop inflected soul with a modern freshness, bags of personality and lyrical dexterity – has seen her championed by everyone from BBC Introducing to Echoes Magazine, who snapped her up for a cover feature. This adds to 200k+ YouTube hits; acclaim in a diverse range of media including Q, Clash, DJ Mag, AfroPunk, Earmilk, Artrocker and USA Today; props from Trevor Nelson, MistaJam, Target, Don Letts, Nemone, Huey Morgan, John Kennedy, Mr Scruff, Harry Shearer, Craig Charles and Chase & Status; and radio sessions including XFM X-Posure, The Selector and MistaJam’s Xmas Party Best Of 2013 show.
With her unique talent in high demand, Harleighblu also has a number of side projects bubbling away to continue the buzz later in the year, including an electronic EP which features cuts with Eats Everything, South Soul Project and Titeknots, among others. A collaboration is also in the works with the legendary Adrian Younge’s new production outfit, Starkiller. Meanwhile this talented young singer continues to win fans wherever she goes, and gain strong daytime and specialist airplay across BBC 1Xtra, Radio 1, 6Music; XFM, The Selector, Mi Soul, KCRW, NPR, FIP, and many more stations across the world.
