“With vocals falling somewhere between a dreamy Erykah Badu and Belleruche's Kathrin deBoer”SoulBounce

Ahead of the official release of their sophomore album ‘Please Rewind’ on 6th November (US)/20th November (ROW), Moonchild’s digital single “The Truth” drops on 9th October on Tru Thoughts. Performing their new album, Moonchild will support The Internet (Odd Future’s Syd tha Kyd & Matt Martians) on their US/Canada tour this fall.

A dreamy neo-soul/jazz trio from Los Angeles, CA, Moonchild are an exciting new addition to Tru Thoughts, fitting in a treat on the eclectic indie’s roster. In a whirlwind three years Moonchild have self-released two albums, and collaborated or toured with highly-respected names in the soul-jazz crowd including Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, India. Arie, Leela James and more. Attracting international tastemaker support from the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music), WHUR-DC, KCRW and LA 102.3, the band have also found themselves being praised by a host of iconic artists including Robert Glasper, Laura Mvula, James Poyser, Jazzy Jeff, Jose James and Tyler, The Creator and The Internet. Having signed to Tru Thoughts, they are set to gain a wider audience still via an official release for their album ‘Please Rewind’ on the UK label this year.

Amber Navran (vocals, tenor saxophone), Max Bryk (alto saxophone, flute, clarinet, keyboards) and Andris Mattson (trumpet/flugelhorn, keyboards) met in 2012 in their junior year at the University of Southern California in the Jazz Studies programme. Inspired by the respected hip hop and progressive electronic music scene in LA, the group’s sound continues to blossom as they create music influenced by the likes of J Dilla, Flying Lotus and D’Angelo - all of whom have been prevalent in broadening the groups musical horizons over the years, leading up to the production of their 2015 release - ‘Please Rewind’.

The lead single from the album, “The Truth,” is a downtempo, Dilla-driven, hip hop-infused rhythm with soaring trumpet solos and arresting cosmic harmonics. As the track opens you are greeted by a syncopated beat laden with soul claps and snares, and an oscillated Wurlitzer jammed in reverse to form the backbone of the main riff. Behind these components, electronic synths hum like an electromagnetic recording of space. Amber’s defiant, robust vocals roll in on a vocoder, which - fused with a post-bop jazz flow comparable to that of Karin Krog and Blossom Dearie - resonate with celestial charm. Even though “The Truth” does have discernible cosmic motifs and spacey samples, Amber insists that the song’s lyrics are much more down to earth and in kilter with simple everyday problems than imagined: “It’s about being stressed out about life but having people who love you to get you through.”

Today you can find Moonchild playing in hangouts across the States, keen to pay homage to the music of jazz giants and their electronic protégés. Performing in these anachronistic times, like LA based artist Kamasi Washington’s The West Coast Get Down and The Internet, Moonchild use a three-piece horn section to relay acoustic and neo-soul elements over electronic contemporary beats.Their musical inspirations and dedication to the progressive scene in LA has considerably driven the flow behind the loose rhythms and obscure vocals of ‘Please Rewind’, which have been lauded as “delicious” by the likes of Laura Mvula and are appreciated by audiences worldwide.

Over the past three years Moonchild have performed with remarkable names like Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, Leela James, James Poyser, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Jose James, India.Arie, Frankie Beverly feat. Maze, Robert Glasper, etc. Moonchild are set to support The Internet on their upcoming fall tour which kicks off this September; check out the new tour dates below - it’s going to be a very special affair.
