“Badungdeng (DieMantle Remix)” is a straight-up 150bpm raving tune with a weighty bassline that will have you hooked from the first drop. “It's a sound we've been working on for a minute and touched on with our “Sex Machine” track that came out on a limited vinyl run on GutterFunk last year. It’s a combination of all the styles we’re into: jungle, garage, grime, hip hop - basically, bass-heavy music for the rave” DJ Die explains.
DieMantle’s decision to re-up Sleepin’ Giantz iconic “Badungdeng” was an astute move on their part. “I was doing a mix for Annie Nightingale and wanted to do a V.I.P of the original “Badungdeng”” DJ Die explains. “I called Zed Bias and asked him if he could send the A Cappella over, and shortly after we came up with the idea to do a 150bpm flip of the track”. Dismantle continues: “Then we got the sounds together, lased the beats and bass, and time stretched the vocals from 125 to 150bpm and it worked out sweet”.
United by their common goal to make a banger, DieMantle’s remix is a homage to the cultural importance of UK bass music; it’s a refreshing nod to clubbing scene. When you look back on the challenges that have faced UK nightlife in 2016: club closures, near-closures and the policing of sound, it’s encouraging that DieMantle have re-composed Sleepin’ Giantz high-energy raving tune—a track that simply celebrates music—to be played on the dancefloor.
“Badungdeng” was originally created by Sleepin’ Giantz-a collaboration between three pioneering UK heavyweights -Zed Bias (the musical alter-ego of the Manchester based producer Dave Jones, one of the founders of breakbeat garage), godfather of British hip hop and London Posse legend Rodney P and Fallacy (the missing link between grime and UK hip hop). Since 2012, “Badungdeng” has received underground props and spins from Benji B (BBC Radio 1), Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music), MistaJam (BBC 1Xtra),and coverage in Clash, DJ Mag, XLR8R and Q.
DJ Die’s contributions to the UK scene have significantly helped to shape Bristol’s dance music landscape. His achievements since the late 80’s include: co-founding Reprazent with Roni Size (which won the Mercury Music Prize in 1997 after being released on Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label), dropping an album on XL Recordings as Breakbeat Era, putting out innovative releases on Full Cycle and V Recordings, and founding two record labels: GutterFunk & Clear Skyz.
