Already enjoying radio play from Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2) and Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1).
‘April Song’ is a semi-autobiographical collection of folk and jazz tales, carving Mitra out as an important new voice in the musical landscape.
Mitra is joined on the album by some of the most talked about names from the current crop of young jazz musicians, including her husband and co-arranger for the album Tim Giles but also Riaan Vosloo, James Allsopp, Philip Hochstrate, Fulvio Sigurta and Ross Stanley.
Born in England to an Indian father and an Irish mother, Mitra was a Cambridge choral scholar and studied North Indian music in Calcutta and folk music in the Caribbean. Jazz became part of the equation when she moved to London and took turns in the capital’s jam nights, taking influence from – and inspiring comparisons to - blues and jazz greats: Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Billie Holiday, Anita O’Day, Ella Fitzgerald.
\"I Love her voice, I love her Englishness\"
- Giles Peterson -
\"Full of British jazz talent, Sara has a lovely voice, this is a great new album\"
- Jamie Cullum -
